Love is in the air on FX’s *Adults. *The Gen Z sitcom, which streams on Hulu, closed its eight-episode season 2 arc with not one but *two* romantic pairings under the same roof.

The first one, viewers anticipated: Anton (Owen Thiele) and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), who shared a charged kiss at the end of season 1, finally get together at the end of the season 2 finale, “Vote for Paul Baker,” with Issa’s (Amita Rao) encouragement.

The second one? It’s a shocker. Billie (Lucy Freyer) and Samir (Malik Elassal) emerged from a closed bedroom door, half-dressed, before nervously checking the hallway and sharing a kiss.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and show co-creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw tell * *that the characters might not even know what happens next.

“We’re leaving two people who acted on something that felt right and felt right in the moment, but who, probably, have a lot of questions on the other side of it,” Shaw says.

Unlike Anton and Paul Baker, who shared both their first and second kiss in front of a group of people, Lucy and Malik’s hookup is a secret.

“It’s between the audience and them,” Kronengold says. “This is really only for them for now. But also, is it the kind of decision that is meant to be long-lasting, or are they just finding themselves in a particular moment where they have what each other needs right now or even tonight?”

Samir, after all, just broke up with his girlfriend Carly (Rachel Marsh) in the same episode. But that doesn’t mean Billie is a rebound.

“This is a very different dynamic than the kind of relationship we’ve explored in the show thus far,” Kronengold explains. “These are two lifelong best friends who maybe over the years have had unrequited crushes on each other, but this is their first time acting on them. And I think you see from Malik and Lucy’s faces, they did an incredible job of those performances, how electric it feels, how scary it feels, and how risky it feels, frankly.”

Freyer believes that the hookup is an “impulsive” decision for Billie and Samir.

“It doesn’t feel like a premeditated thing,” she tells EW.

Elassal agrees, but says the characters “don’t know if it was a mistake yet.”

With four roommates exploring an in-house romance, that leaves Issa as the fifth wheel. And once she figures out what’s going on, she’s likely going to be upset.

“She’s gonna throw a tantrum,” Rao says. “I think she’s gonna throw a big fit. They all broke the rule that she set. But I’m excited to see Issa in her single era.”

There’s a lot of material for future storylines. *Adults* has yet to be renewed for a third season, but Kronengold and Shaw are ready to explore what’s next for the group of friends in Queens when the time comes.

“We have many, many plans,” Shaw shares.
