George Clooney received the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival on September 2.
His longtime friend Brad Pitt wrote a humorous message to congratulate him.
Laura Dern, who presented Clooney with the award, read it aloud during the festival’s opening ceremony.
Brad Pitt pulled no punches while honoring his friend George Clooney at the Venice Film Festival. On September 2, Clooney received the Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement, and although Pitt couldn’t be there to celebrate, he made sure to relay a humorous message through presenter Laura Dern.

“He can do, perform, accomplish, compete at most anything and does it better than any of us, but please, keep him off the dance floor,” Dern said, reading Pitt’s note aloud. “He doesn’t know. And now, this pigeon-toed kid from Kentucky, elder statesman, who when you can’t get Brad Pitt you know Clooney will show up because he never met an award he wouldn’t run to, is getting a lifetime achievement award? So why? Why do we love George Clooney?”
“He’s a rogue, a prankster, an altruist, an actor, an athlete,” Pitt’s message continued. “The only guy you’d want in a crisis. A father, a husband, a global citizen, a defender of justice, and...a really bad dancer.”

Clooney and Pitt met long before they co-starred in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. The actors both auditioned for the role of J.D. in 1991’s Thelma & Louise, though the part would end up going to Pitt.

“We’ve been friends for a long time,” Clooney said of Pitt in a 2024 GQinterview. “And it’s fun because we also check in on each other every once in a while, which is an important part of this…you always have to make sure everybody’s okay.”

It’s clear that both men share a sense of humor: Clooney even managed to poke fun at himself while discussing his latest achievement.
“I’ve had so many extraordinary moments in Venice,” the actor said in a statement prior to Wednesday’s opening ceremony. “This festival is without question my favorite, and to be given the Golden Lion is a tremendous honor. It also probably means I’m old, but I’ll take it.”
