Christian Bale Found Out Gloria Steinem Was His Stepmom in This Surprising Way

Gloria Steinem was once Christian Bale’s stepmom.

The trailblazing feminist icon was married to Bale’s father, David, from 2000 to 2003.

“I don’t think my father thought that anything like this would happen to him at this point in his life,” Christian Bale previously said.

Not only was the late Gloria Steinem a trailblazing feminist icon, but she was also at one point Christian Bale’s stepmom. Steinem was married to Bale’s father, David, from 2000 until he died of brain lymphoma in 2003.

Back in 2018, the 52-year-old actor shared the surprising way he found out they had gotten married.

“It was news to me,” Bale told The Guardian. “I was in Germany. I found out about it afterwards.”

Earlier, in 2001, he elaborated, saying he was “looking forward” to seeing his father with a partner.

“I actually haven’t seen Gloria or my dad since they got married because I’ve been away since May,” he told Interview Magazine. “Talking of unexpected things, I don’t think my father thought that anything like this would happen to him at this point in his life.”

The American Psycho actor continued, “My wife [Sibi Blažić] and I will be spending a few weeks with the two of them soon, and it’ll be fantastic because I’ve been accustomed to my father always being alone…Now I’m looking forward to seeing him with a partner.”

Steinem, who had once been critical of marriage, opened up about her decision to tie the knot in a statement issued by Voters for Choice in 2000.

“Though I’ve worked many years to make marriage more equal, I never expected to take advantage of it myself,” she said. Steinem did not remarry following his death.

“I’m happy, surprised, and one day will write about it, but for now, I hope this proves what feminists have always said—that feminism is about the ability to choose what’s right at each time of our lives.”

Steinem’s death was announced via Instagram on September 3. She was 92.

“Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” the statement read. “Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.”
