- Christopher Nolan said that he kept his Oscars out of sight while writing *The Odyssey*.

- The filmmaker said that he thought it would be “daunting” to write with his awards in view.

- Nolan recalled his son sharing a brutal dig about his Oscar history despite winning multiple awards for *Oppenheimer*.

Kids: they keep us humble!

Christopher Nolan discussed the writing process for his upcoming epic *The Odyssey* during a new interview with BBC News, and shared an amusing anecdote about his son being unimpressed with the filmmaker’s various accolades.

“My son walked into my office while I was writing on *The Odyssey* and said, ‘Where are your Oscars?’” Nolan recalled, explaining that his son had “been away” for his Academy Awards triumphs for *Oppenheimer* in 2024.

The filmmaker told his son that he kept his awards out of view to minimize the pressure he felt while adapting Homer’s epic poem for the big screen. “I said to him very seriously, ‘Well, I’m trying to write a new project and if I’ve got Oscars sitting there on the shelf, you know, think about how daunting that’d be,’” the director remembered.

Nolan’s son then pointed out a potential flaw in his father’s logic. “He looked at me, and he said, ‘But you didn’t win for writing.’”

Indeed, Nolan has yet to earn an Oscar for his screenwriting. The *Dark Knight* filmmaker took home two Academy Awards for *Oppenheimer* in 2024 — one for Best Director and one for Best Picture. The film also won the awards for Best Actor (for Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (for Robert Downey Jr.), Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Nolan was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at that same ceremony, but the award ultimately went to Cord Jefferson for *American Fiction*. He was previously nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 2002 for *Memento* and again in 2011 for *Inception*.

The filmmaker didn’t say which of his three sons delivered the aforementioned dig at his nonexistent writing Oscar, but it’s likely that it was his youngest child, Magnus, who was the only one of Nolan’s four children who was not present at the Academy Awards in 2024 (thus lining up with the director’s comment that his son had “been away” that awards season).

Nolan and his wife (and producing partner) Emma Thomas share four children: Flora, Oliver, Rory, and Magnus.

Elsewhere in the BBC interview, Nolan explained his approach to reframing Homer’s source material for a modern audience.

“I’m adapting. I’m able to do whatever I want with it, really,” he said. “I’m not bound by the language, I’m working beyond the language. I’m just looking at the story”

He also noted why Odysseus’ adventure has persisted for thousands of years. “I think this is why it sustains even though some of the values of it are obviously archaic and outdated,” he said. “The story movements, the motifs, the ways in which human beings interact, they do have this timeless quality, and you can look at them through a modern lens.”
