Christopher Nolan said that he kept his Oscars out of sight while writing The Odyssey.
The filmmaker said that he thought it would be âdauntingâ to write with his awards in view.
Nolan recalled his son sharing a brutal dig about his Oscar history despite winning multiple awards for Oppenheimer.
Kids: they keep us humble!
Christopher Nolan discussed the writing process for his upcoming epic The Odyssey during a new interview with BBC News, and shared an amusing anecdote about his son being unimpressed with the filmmakerâs various accolades.
âMy son walked into my office while I was writing on The Odyssey and said, âWhere are your Oscars?ââ Nolan recalled, explaining that his son had âbeen awayâ for his Academy Awards triumphs for Oppenheimer in 2024.

The filmmaker told his son that he kept his awards out of view to minimize the pressure he felt while adapting Homerâs epic poem for the big screen. âI said to him very seriously, âWell, Iâm trying to write a new project and if Iâve got Oscars sitting there on the shelf, you know, think about how daunting thatâd be,ââ the director remembered.
Nolanâs son then pointed out a potential flaw in his fatherâs logic. âHe looked at me, and he said, âBut you didnât win for writing.ââ
Indeed, Nolan has yet to earn an Oscar for his screenwriting. The Dark Knight filmmaker took home two Academy Awards for Oppenheimer in 2024 â one for Best Director and one for Best Picture. The film also won the awards for Best Actor (for Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (for Robert Downey Jr.), Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
Nolan was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at that same ceremony, but the award ultimately went to Cord Jefferson for American Fiction. He was previously nominated for Best Original Screenplay in 2002 for Memento and again in 2011 for Inception.

The filmmaker didnât say which of his three sons delivered the aforementioned dig at his nonexistent writing Oscar, but itâs likely that it was his youngest child, Magnus, who was the only one of Nolanâs four children who was not present at the Academy Awards in 2024 (thus lining up with the directorâs comment that his son had âbeen awayâ that awards season).
Nolan and his wife (and producing partner) Emma Thomas share four children: Flora, Oliver, Rory, and Magnus.

Elsewhere in the BBC interview, Nolan explained his approach to reframing Homerâs source material for a modern audience.
âIâm adapting. Iâm able to do whatever I want with it, really,â he said. âIâm not bound by the language, Iâm working beyond the language. Iâm just looking at the storyâ
He also noted why Odysseusâ adventure has persisted for thousands of years. âI think this is why it sustains even though some of the values of it are obviously archaic and outdated,â he said. âThe story movements, the motifs, the ways in which human beings interact, they do have this timeless quality, and you can look at them through a modern lens.â
