Danny Pintauro recently made a candid confession about starring on Who’s the Boss? 34 years after the sitcom ended.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the former child actor, now 50, admitted, “When I think back about Jonathan, I have mixed feelings.”

Who’s the Boss? featured Pintauro as Jonathan Bower; Tony Danza as Tony Micelli, a retired pro baseball player who worked as Jonathan’s family’s live-in housekeeper; Judith Light as Jonathan’s mother, Angela Bower, an advertising executive in New York; Alyssa Milano, Tony’s daughter; and Katherine Helmond as Angela’s mother, Mona Robinson.

“Overall, obviously, the experience was amazing,” Pintauro explained. “I mean, it’s not about the experience of being on set — that was perfect. Like, it couldn’t have been any better. The family, right? The sort of camaraderie.”

He continued: “I think it’s because, the person that I’m watching was going through a lot at the time, secretly. You know, I was young, I was trying to figure out and navigate these thoughts about my sexuality. At that time, the narrative around being gay was very negative. So, when I watch the clip, I see the queer. It’s that I know that there’s more going on.”

After Who’s the Boss? ended in 1992, Pintauro stepped away from acting to attend Stanford. A tabloid approached him while he was a student about a story outing him.

“I was already sort of living openly at Stanford and I got a call from the Inquirer saying, ‘We’re doing this story,'” he told ET. At the time, he said he felt like “my life is over as we know it.” Still, Pintauro ended up speaking to the outlet to have some control over the narrative.

Today, he has been married to Wil Tabares since 2014 and returned to acting in the Lifetime TV movie  A Country Christmas Harmony in 2022. Pintauro has also been open bout his HIV positive status and addiction recovery, telling People in 2021 that he’s “much happier as a person with no secrets.”

Who’s the Boss? aired for eight seasons from 1984 to 1992.
