The Los Angeles premiere of *Moana* was a family affair for Dwayne Johnson.
Joining The Rock on the red carpet at the Hollywood Bowl were his three daughters: Simone (also known as her ring name Ava Raine), Jasmine and Tiana. He shares Simone with ex-wife Dany Garcia — who was in attendance with husband Dave Rienzi — and his two younger daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, with wife Lauren Hashian. (Hashian was also by his side.)
Johnson’s mother, Ata, even posed for the blended family photo.

In the live-action adaptation of *Moana*, Johnson became the first Disney actor to play the same role in both an animated film and its live-action counterpart as Maui, the demigod.
He told *** *about his transformation into the larger-than-life character. A major difference between the voice acting and physically embodying Maui was the costume.
“The thing that became a challenge, that I had to work through very quickly, that I didn’t anticipate was the prosthetics and the hair and then the body. That is an additional 40 pounds on you,” Johnson said of the bodysuit. “There’s a freedom when you perform, whether it’s as an actor or singing. So that was an adjustment on how to actually work my emotions through the 40 pounds of prosthetics and hair and body that I had on me.”

He also spoke to the movie being adapted just 10 years after the (still popular) original was released. “How do you honor this? How do you say ‘we love it too’ and make it something that can be a companion and not try to be the same thing, but also trust what works?” Johnson wondered.
“The opportunity to have flesh and blood and have human beings tell the story and sing these songs and be in this world, there’s something so fundamentally different about that experience of watching and feeling that.”

In a previous interview, Johnson had spoken about his kids’ reactions to the film. When Jasmine was 4 years old and learned that he was the voice of the mighty demigod, she wasn’t thrilled. “I said, ‘You know, that’s Daddy’s voice, and I’m going to show you,’” the actor told PEOPLE in 2019.
“Maui starts singing, and I then start singing, and within 10 seconds she’s trying to put a pillow over my mouth and says, ‘You’re ruining the song.’”
In *Moana*, Johnson sings “You’re Welcome,” along with “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” in the sequel.

Overtime, however, his girls learned to love Maui. As for his daughters’ favorite character, Johnson told PEOPLE in December 2024 that it’s him as Maui. “Of course I am!” he declared when asked if he is the top pick. “We’ve very fortunate.”
