- England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a ā€œseriousā€ wrist injury during postgame celebrations.

- On July 5, England secured a historic 3-2 win against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

England was forced to cut their celebrations short, moments after reaching the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

After the team’s 3-2 victory over Mexico at the historic Azteca Stadium on Sunday, England’s Premier League player Jordan Henderson suffered an unexpected injury. Having secured their win, the players raced towards fans to the tune of Oasis’ ā€œWonderwall,ā€ the song that has soundtracked each of their World Cup wins.

Afterwards, as Henderson hopped over an advertising board and back onto the pitch, cameras captured the moment when he fell over and onto his arm. He was subsequently swarmed by his teammates and within minutes, medics attended to the midfielder before moving him onto a stretcher and transporting him to a hospital for further treatment.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has since confirmed to ESPN that Henderson had suffered a ā€œseriousā€ injury.

ā€œHe injured his wrist, he is at the moment in the hospital,ā€ Tuchel told the outlet. ā€œIt is a quite serious injury.ā€

As per their prior jubilation over the win, Tuchel added, ā€œIt just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure which is going on. I just did the [media duties] and the doc told me he’s in the hospital.ā€

Henderson ultimately did not fly back to the team’s Kansas City, Mo., training base with the rest of the squad, who departed that Sunday night. Instead, he remained in Mexico City, receiving treatment.

On Monday, *The Athletic* reported that Henderson will require surgery for his wrist and is thus expected to play no further part in the tournament.

His fellow midfielder, Jude Bellingham, who scored two of England’s goals on Sunday, told the outlet, ā€œ[Henderson] is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.ā€

Henderson has played in 91 World Cup games for his country since making his debut in 2010. He is not the only member of the team who has been benched over an injury: Right back Reece James suffered a hamstring injury in England’s opening match.

England is slated to play Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.
