Taxpayers across Georgia are starting to receive state-issued refund payments as officials roll out a new round of surplus tax refunds authorized by recent legislation.

Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue announced that payments under HB 1000 have officially begun, marking the fourth time such refunds have been issued during Kemp's administration.

Who qualifies for the refund

To be eligible, taxpayers must have:

Filed both their 2024 and 2025 Georgia individual income tax returns

Paid into the state tax system

Refund amounts vary based on tax liability and are capped at:

$250 for single filers or married filing separately

$375 for head of household filers

$500 for married filing jointly

What officials are saying

Officials said the program will return more than $1 billion to Georgia taxpayers over the coming weeks. Most eligible filers who submitted returns before the deadline are expected to receive payments soon.

State leaders credited Georgia's balanced budget approach for making the refunds possible.

How to check eligibility

Taxpayers can verify whether they qualify using the state's online eligibility tool through the Georgia Tax Center, which requires basic filing and income information.
