Just one day before Courtney Smith and Hamilton “Hammy” Morley’s New York nuptials, an unexpected guest crashed their welcome party: Joe Jonas.
About 100 of the couple’s closest friends and relatives gathered at their favorite Brooklyn restaurant, Gersi, on June 4 to kick off their wedding weekend. Suddenly, two guests ushered everyone to the front. They brought in a TV and held it up for all to see. On the screen was none other than Jonas.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Courtney and Hammy,” Jonas, 36, said in his video before pausing as a record scratch sound effect played. He then dramatically fell onto his knees and questioned over and over, “Hammy? She’s marrying who? What? She’s marrying Hammy?” He cried, “Noooo!”
After gathering his composure, Jonas got up and continued. “Anyway, sorry about that. As I was saying, we are gathered here today to kick off a weekend-long celebration of Courtney and Hammy,” he said, playfully rolling his eyes at the groom’s name.
Jonas then gave the bride, 32, and groom, 33, his best piece of marriage advice. The Jonas Brothers member was previously married to actress Sophie Turner, from whom he finalized his divorce in September 2024.
“I am so honored to have even a little part in this, so I will use this time to give you some sage advice,” he said. “Marriage is a lot like being in the Jonas Brothers. That’s right. Communication is everything. Matching outfits happen eventually. And regardless of occasional creative differences, you’ll always come back for the encore.”
He concluded, “Now, I want everyone to raise a glass — I’m gonna raise my Coors Light — in toasting to the next chapter of your beautiful lives, even if it is Hammy you’re with. Courtney, I’m happy for ya. Happy for both of you, and I wish the two of you nothing but happiness until the year 3000!”

Smith shared a clip of her shocked reaction on TikTok, writing, “I will never recover from this @joejonas 🫶♥️ sorry we couldn’t get married but come drink a Coors Light with us soon!”
Exclusively speaking with PEOPLE, Smith recalls that she “started crying” the moment she saw Jonas onscreen, thinking to herself, “There’s no way this is what I think it is.” Even now, she says, “It’s insane that this happened. It still feels like a fever dream.”

Guests were just as “completely shocked” as she was, apart from the few people who helped coordinate the “hilarious” surprise.
“It’s one of those things where you never expect these little surprises, and just the amount of people who went out of their way to do this for me was just really so special. I’m so grateful,” Smith says.

Smith explains that she works at an experiential marketing and production agency. During the company’s holiday party in December, she was discussing her wedding with a few colleagues and the company’s president when she mentioned — as “an offhanded joke” — that it would “make my whole wedding if somehow Joe Jonas got there.”
“We had worked with them on a couple of projects. So saying it at work was kind of just like a long shot that I never expected truly anyone to take seriously,” Smith says. “I guess my co-workers had secretly been working on this for months. Like, truly went out of their way to try to find a way to have this special moment for me, which is absolutely incredible.”

Jonas edited his fun video himself, according to Smith.
“It just was really sweet and genuine,” she says. “I’m still just shocked he took the time out of his extremely busy schedule to do this. And to give us some marriage advice, so cute.”

She adds, “It just was such a weekend filled with love and friends, and the Joe Jonas moment really, I mean, I don’t think I’ll ever be this cool with my little cousins or any of my friends. Like, I might have hit my peak there. I don’t think I’ll ever live this moment down, like truly insane.”
Smith and Morley tied the knot at The Liberty Warehouse on June 5 after four years together.
