With just days to go until the 98th Academy Awards, Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón is offering public commentary on the controversy surrounding Timothée Chalamet and a comment he recently made about the perceived popularity of ballet and opera.
On Monday, March 9, Gascón, 53, reshared a meme to her Instagram Stories that shows an image of Chalamet's Marty Supreme character on the phone and Gascón's Emilia Pérez character on the phone, in an attempt to make it look like the two were speaking to each other.
"Hola Karla, do u think they gonna make me pass the red carpet at the Oscars? 🤣😂😂," a caption to the meme read. Gascón added her own thoughts on the situation below the original meme. "Are you a trans woman? Then don't worry about it, Tim," she wrote.
"Besides, I love ballet slippers and I've seen The Phantom of the Opera ten times," she continued. "Not sure if that counts for anything. Best of luck with the awards. Even though no one has seen or heard me say anything, while they have both seen and heard you, people still seem to prefer believing whatever the bad guys claim I said."

A growing number of performing artists and figures in Hollywood have publicly chastised Chalamet, 30, in recent days for suggesting that "no one cares about" art forms like ballet and opera during his Variety and CNN town hall with Matthew McConaughey on Feb. 24.
Chalamet made the comment as he discussed Hollywood's efforts to "keep movie theaters alive" and American audiences interested in going out to see new films. "I don't want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive, even though, like, no one cares about this anymore.' All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there," he said during the talk.

The actor appeared to recognize that his comments could be seen as disparaging and immediately added, "I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason."

As she referenced in the meme she re-shared on Instagram, Gascón, the first openly trans person to be nominated for Best Actress, skipped walking the red carpet at the 2025 Oscars in light of criticism she received when her old social media posts criticizing Muslim culture, George Floyd, diversity and more resurfaced during Emilia Pérez's awards season campaign. In the initial aftermath of the controversy, the actress deactivated her X account and made several statements and interviews in which she refuted accusations of racism made against her.
Gascón's movie Emilia Pérez was the most-nominated film at the 2025 Oscars, but it ultimately took home only two awards: Best Original Song and Zoe Saldaña's Best Supporting Actress win. Anora's Mikey Madison won Best Actress over Gascón.
At this year's Oscars, Chalamet is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in Marty Supreme, which received nine nominations, including the Best Picture category.
Conan O'Brien is returning to host the Oscars live on Sunday, March 15, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
