Meghan Markle paid tribute to her “friend and mentor” Gloria Steinem in a lengthy Instagram post on September 3.
Steinem died on September 2 at her New York City home at 92 years old.
The As Ever founder shared that the feminist icon counseled her “during hard times” and provided “extraordinary advice and perspective.”
Meghan Markle is celebrating the “life and legacy” of her “friend and mentor” Gloria Steinem, who died on September 2 at age 92—including how Steinem counseled her “during hard times.”
On September 3—the same day the news of the feminist icon’s death was announced—Meghan wrote on Instagram that she was “grateful to know that in these last few weeks and days she knew exactly how loved and admired she was.”
In her lengthy post honoring Steinem, the Duchess of Sussex remembered “the way in which she helped shape the world for women and all people,” and noted a phrase, “we are linked, not ranked,” that Steinem would often tell her. Meghan added that the former Ms. magazine editor gave her a bracelet with that saying on it, and “I still wear it with pride,” Meghan wrote.
“Publicly, we did interviews together, called young voters to encourage them to have their voices heard, attended award ceremonies, and brainstormed how to help this beautiful yet complicated world to become more equitable,” Meghan wrote. “But privately, she was even better than you would imagine—spending Thanksgiving with our family, introducing me to one of my best friends (forever the champion of female friendship), loving our children with her whole heart, counseling me during hard times, and giving extraordinary advice and perspective with a cup of tea and an unrivaled cheekiness and wit.”

Her favorite story about Glo, as she called her, took place in New York City, when a woman approached her “in absolute awe” and told her she wanted to introduce her daughter to her—even though the woman wasn’t sure her daughter would know who Steinem was. To this, Steinem replied, “It doesn’t matter if she knows who I am. What matters is that she knows who SHE is.”

“Rest in peace, and rest in pride,” Meghan concluded her post. “Look at what you’ve done for all of us. Thank you.”

Steinem “passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” a post announcing her death on Thursday read. It added, “Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.”
Meghan and Steinem met in 2020, the same year the As Ever founder and Prince Harry moved to the U.S. from the U.K. Steinem previously described the duchess—whom she simply called Meg—as “smart, authentic, funny, political.”

At the Women’s Media Center’s 2022 Women’s Media Awards, Steinem called Meghan a “great human being,” telling People, “I’m not an expert on the media, but it seems to me that she is different from the picture of her in the media. She’s smart and funny and devoted to social issues.”
“Maybe it’s the British tabloids that are the problem,” Steinem added with a laugh.
