Born June 24, 1989, in Meopham, England, the British singer began her music career at 18, with the formation of the girl group Paradiso Girls. They dropped their debut single “Patron Tequila” in 2009 and made some waves, reaching No. 3 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart and No. 82 on the Canadian Hot 100. But after an unsuccessful second single, the group disbanded in 2010.

Pursuing a solo career, Bennett found success as a featured artist on tracks from will.i.am and CeeLo Green. In 2011, she joined the Party Rock Tour with LMFAO and was featured on the group’s international hit, “Party Rock Anthem.” The song peaked at No. 1 in 20 countries and became the third best-selling digital song in U.S. history. The music video, which Bennett appeared in, has garnered over 2.5 billion views.

The group released a self-titled EP in 2014, sang on Pitbull’s radio hit “Wild Wild Love,” and were approaching mainstream awareness when Battle died by suicide in September 2015, after a battle with depression. The group released “Lighthouse,” a single in her honor, before disbanding the following year — though they would eventually reform as a trio consisting of Bennett, Slayton, and Jazzy Mejia.

Speaking to PEOPLE about Battle’s death in January 2014, Bennett said, “You can never prepare yourself for something like this, ever. We’d just been in rehearsals the day before, learning choreography for our show, and the next day we were starting the morning as usual when we got the call. I still can’t believe it. I don’t think any of us can. It’s weird that we’re even sitting here, talking about it.”

Through tears, she added, “We learned so much from her. In the video you can see her passion for performance, and you can see her strumming along to the music in the beginning. It’s us showing that she’s still part of the group. She’ll always be part of this group.”
