PETOSKEY — Soccer teams within the Big North Conference have made their first trip around the league.

So far, teams have settled into a clear top, middle and bottom within the standings.

On Tuesday, Petoskey began its second cycle, while trying to stay out of the middle and closer to the top.

Taking on Cadillac, missed opportunities in a 3-2 loss put Petoskey in that second group within the BNC.

“There were some moments where we had some moments of good, crisp and clean soccer, then there is some stuff we’ve got to work on,” Petoskey coach John Lennon said. “A lot of the basics got the best of us in moments tonight.”

It’s a loss that sends Petoskey down to a 5-3 start within the Big North and overall, having begun the season with all league foes.

Gaylord (6-0) and Traverse City West (6-1) have proven to be the top, while Petoskey drops back into the middle of the pack, for now, with Cadillac (5-4) and Traverse City Central (4-4).

“We see the mark with teams like Gaylord and TC West,” Lennon said. “Cadillac played fierce. They were after every 50-50 ball and put us under pressure. The teams that get in there and mix things up will see success.”

Petoskey was first on the board with a goal by Mady Smith, then dropped behind in a 2-1 game, before Smith tied things up again in the second half.

Cadillac then got behind Petoskey again late, capitalizing on one of its few chances again.

“We’ve been talking a lot in these losses about that you’ve got to let it sting and you got to learn from it and we’ve got to get going from the next moment on,” Lennon said. “One of the things I love about this group and coaching this group, they’re good at asking questions and good at problem solving and I really hope we can problem solve these last couple.”

Lennon credited keeper Isla Scheib with some tough moments in goal on the night, without much to do with Cadillac finding a couple scoring chances that would have been tough to stop.

The good news for Petoskey ahead will come in the form of hosting its annual tournament at the Click Road Soccer Complex this weekend, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 9, finally welcoming non-conference teams.

Whether wins or losses come, it’s an opportunity away from the league to test themselves and try some things.

“Those are some of the best teams we’ll see for a while with Midland Dow and Marquette has been sharp,” Lennon added.

NON-CONFERENCE

Harbor Springs 3, Gaylord 3

GAYLORD — The top of the Big North Conference or the top of the Northern Shores Conference, who takes it?

Well, apparently Gaylord and Harbor Springs are equally good and an answer won’t be coming. A 3-3 tie on the pitch in Gaylord Tuesday made that clear.

“The girls played hard all night and came back from being down 3-1,” Harbor Springs coach Aaron Riley said. “They are starting to believe in themselves and one another. Gaylord is well coached and we are happy to play as hard as we did tonight.”

Riley gave special recognition to his midfield as well, with Lily and Sophie Barnadyn, Meme Animikwam and Eden Hume all standing out.

Stefi Reskevics scored a pair for the Rams, then Maeve Riley added one, with assists from Riley, Lily Barnadyn and Reskevics.

Harbor Springs' Stefi Reskevics controls the ball against Gaylord during a non-conference matchup on Tuesday in Gaylord.

The draw was the first of the season for Gaylord, moving them to 9-1-1 overall, while Harbor Springs moved to 8-1-2.

Both teams currently lead their respective conference as well, without a loss in league play as of May 6.

The Rams return to the field on Thursday at Grayling, then travel to Cheboygan on Monday, May 11.

The Ramblers moved to 4-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the Northern Shores.
