Exactly 42 years after Prince’s iconic *Purple Rain** *film was released, Broadway producer Orin Wolf announced on Monday that the movie is headed to the stage in spring 2027.

“Prince is, without doubt, one of the rarest, most brilliant musicians we’ve ever had,” Wolf said in a statement on Monday. “What he accomplished with *Purple Rain* in 1984 — the song, the album and the film — is a testament to the art of making music and showcases it at the highest level.”

The stage show was originally announced in 2024, kicking off in Minneapolis last year. After its pre-Broadway run came to an end in November 2025, a new creative team was brought on board. Saheem Ali — the Tony Award-nominated *Buena Vista Social Club* director— will direct *Purple Rain*. Wolf praised the way Ali “prioritizes serving the music” and promises to do so with Prince’s “legendary music.”

Wolf’s statement concluded: “It will be every bit as exciting for audiences today as it was when we first heard these songs on our boom boxes.”

Ali, meanwhile, wrote that he’s “honored” to bring Prince’s story to life in a statement of his own on Monday.

“Prince was an icon and *Purple Rain* is iconic; one of the best musical films of my generation. I watched it as a teenager in Kenya and though I was appropriately scandalized, it never left me, especially the music,” the director shared. “Our aim is not only to honor the legacy that Prince built, but to make his timeless music feel urgent and alive, passing it on to the next generation of fans who will make it their own.”

Peter Duchan was tapped to write the musical book while Jason Michael Webb will lead musical supervision, arrangements and orchestrations. Ebony Williams has been named as the show’s choreographer.

While the cast has yet to be announced, the *Purple Rain *stage adaptation will follow the fictional story of The Kid, a budding rock musician in Minneapolis who is contending with “a tumultuous home environment, a rival band and a budding romance,” per the official description. The movie was originally released in July 1984, and marked Prince’s film debut.

“Prince gave us the blueprint for this story, and our job has been to make sure his voice and music lead the show and to celebrate his remarkable legacy,” Duchan shared on Monday. “It’s a privilege to help bring this story to the stage, and we’re all excited to share it with fans of the film and the album around the world.”
