Described as a legend of Detroit's Cass Corridor, Old Miami bar owner and Vietnam veteran Daniel Overstreet, 78, died May 1.

According to his obituary, the Detroit native was a "loud and proud" decorated veteran whose legacy expands far beyond the Old Miami bar, described as a "Mecca of the disenfranchised."

The Old Miami bar on Cass Avenue in Detroit hosted the Second Annual Great American Slams and Jamz Supershow at the Old Miami Bar in Detroit. The "Miami" in Old Miami actually stands for 'Missing In Action of Michigan.' Photos taken on Saturday, July 6, 2013.

Located on Cass between W. Alexandrine and Selden, the Old Miami is an authentic dive bar that hosts punk shows, stand-up comedy, open mic nights and more. There's a pool table and a billion bits of veteran and Detroit ephemera inside the bar, and a lush, grassy yard for parties in the back.

"His bar and his personality are gruff, gritty beacons bridging the Detroit of the Vietnam War era to the kinder, friendlier Detroit of today," reads the obituary.

Services are set for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 16 at the James H. Cole Funeral Home at 2024 W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. A celebration of life event will take place at the bar, 3930 Cass, immediately following the service.
