Vergara uses family gatherings during the games to promote health discussions inspired by her "Detect the SOS" campaign
Sofía Vergara has been eagerly anticipating the World Cup (even helping Owen Wilson prep for it, if you've seen her Telemundo commercial) and has big plans to cheer on her home team, Colombia, both at home and in person. There's just one problem.
"It's been good and bad because, like, for example, I'm going to be able to watch some games with them together," she tells PEOPLE. "We're going to be able to do what we do when we come together, which is eat and put together the family and everything. It's also created some problems because I am going to be able to go to some games, and I cannot get all of them in the games."
She'll definitely be at the first game on U.S. soil, in L.A. June 12; she also knows she'll be at the final outside New York July 19. And she's got a few more New York games in between. That means a handful of tickets to share with a lot of relatives who are eager to join.
"It's been kind of like a little bit of a struggle to pick who deserves to go to the World Cup," the Barranquilla-born star, 53, shares. "But it's all been fun!"

The actress' hook up isn't just limited to tickets, either. She happens to know another very famous Colombian superstar with a big job to do during the World Cup Final Halftime Show: Shakira.

"I don't even want to name-drop, but she texted me yesterday," Vergara says. "She asked me if I was going to be in L.A. for the games. And so I'm very excited because I'm sure she's going to give a hell of a show like she always does. And she's very excited to do it. It's going to be amazing. For sure I'm going to watch her."
For the games she's watching at home, Vergara promises "good food, good music, and good things to drink," and the chance to spend quality time with her family: "When you're together, that's when you really get to enjoy each other and eat, and fight, and complain and it's fun."

She also recommends taking that togetherness time to address health issues with family members, something she hoped to accomplish with her Boehringer Ingelheim "Detect the SOS" Super Bowl commercial, which encourages people with conditions such as high blood pressure (which her mother has) and diabetes to take the uACR test to detect any serious health conditions.
"It's hard to talk about health with your family ... nobody wants to hear it. We're hoping that with the commercial, like, 'You see Ma, this is what we need to do this!' To be watching something and see a commercial it's like, 'Oh, is that what I have? Do I need to do that?' "

With serious conversations and seriously nail-biting games ahead, Vergara is glad to be part of all the World Cup excitement. "It's going to be such an amazing month I think for everyone," she says. "I can't wait because it brings people together, and that's why it's so special for us. We got lucky to be able to be part of the World Cup with this mission, and be able to reach so much people. Because that was the whole point of it."
