- *Supergirl* trailer reveals a first look at DC's big 2026 summer movie, including Jason Momoa's Lobo and Milly Alcock in her super suit.

- James Gunn says the film goes to "very dark places" and will authentically adapt the *Woman of Tomorrow* comic.

- "She's got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons," says director Craig Gillespie.

DC's first *Supergirl* trailer, unveiling *House of the Dragon* star Milly Alcock as the titular strongwoman from Krypton, makes a few things clear about next year's big superhero event film.

One, Supergirl is *not* Superman. Don't let the similar super suits or the fact that they're cousins fool you. "He sees the good in everyone, and I see the truth," Alcock's Kara Zor-El says in the footage. We see clips of her throwing back shots on distant planets — ones with red suns, the kind that weaken Kryptonians, enough so the indestructible woman can actually feel the effects of alcohol.

She alludes to some of this trauma as a witness to the destruction of Krypton, her entire family, and her entire civilization. "Krypton didn't die in a day," she says. "The Gods are not that kind."

At a trailer preview event this past Sunday in New York City, director Craig Gillespie (*I, Tonya*, *Cruella*) told a group of reporters and influencers, "She's got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different than where Superman is in his life." He praised Alcock for leaning into the complexity of all that, adding, "It's really surprising, the headspace she's in and the journey she goes on, for a typical superhero movie, which this is not."

'House of the Dragon' boss Ryan Condal congratulated Milly Alcock on Supergirl

Ryan Condal attends the HBO Original Drama Series "House Of The Dragon" World Premiere at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on July 27, 2022 in Los Angeles, California, Milly Alcock attends the 60th anniversary party of TAG Heuer Carrera at Outernet London on April 20, 2023 in London, England.

In a side conversation with ** at the event, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of DC Studios, called this an authentic adaptation of *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*, the acclaimed comic book story arc from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. That means, despite the upbeat trailer — which feels a lot like *Guardians of the Galaxy* in tone — the story (from screenwriter Ana Nogueira) will tackle heavy material.**

The main plot of the comic sees Supergirl celebrating her 21st birthday by flying across the galaxy with her dog, Krypto (returning from *Superman*). As seen in the trailer by way of actress Eve Ridley, Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young alien girl, seeks Kara's help to take revenge on the one who killed her family. Matthias Schoenaerts, who's been in the news lately for other reasons, is that figure, Krem of the Yellow Hills.

"If you're a fan of the comic book, you're going to love the movie," Safran tells EW. "But it's for a much broader audience, perhaps, than even the comic book. Craig's stuff balances humor and pathos and emotion so well...So I feel like the tone is unique among superhero movies, but a very accessible tone."

Gunn confirms the movie goes to "very dark places," saying, "The whole point of the movie is Kara's upbringing is totally different than Clark's upbringing. He's very fortunate. He was an infant adopted by incredibly loving parents. She grew up and watched every single person around her that she loved die in a horrible way. She's bitter, and she's jaded, and she's messed up, and that's where we start with her."

The last point is all the other DC Comics characters glimpsed in the *Supergirl* trailer. David Krumholtz will play Zor-El, Supergirl's father, while Emily Beecham plays Alura In-Ze, her mother. And then, of course, there's Jason Momoa as Lobo.

We get a single shot of the former Aquaman actor, from the Zack Snyder age of DC movies, as the alien motorcycle-riding bounty hunter, puffing on a cigar. This is a role the man has been after for years, and we finally see him in all his glory.

*Supergirl* will open in domestic theaters on June 26, 2026, and internationally a couple of days earlier on June 24, 2026. Watch the trailer above.**
