Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got married in a star-studded ceremony at Madison Square Garden on July 3

In this week’s PEOPLE cover story, sources share inside details from their big day

“They’re really excited to enjoy a few weeks of newlywed life before football season gets going again,” an insider says

On a swelteringly hot summer day in New York City, an elated couple tied the knot. The glowing bride walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of Taylor Swift’s iconic “Love Story” and read emotional vows paying tribute to her husband’s kind spirit. The groom, beloved for his charismatic and happy-go-lucky personality, wore a white tuxedo and asked a friend of his to officiate the ceremony. It was, by all accounts, a “traditional” wedding, save for one rather untraditional component: The bride was 14-time Grammy winner Swift herself.

Over two decades the music mogul has skyrocketed from teenage country sensation to pop superstar to highest-grossing live music artist of all time, thanks to her unparalleled ability to channel her romances and heartbreaks into chart-topping hits. And on July 3, she and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said “I do” at Madison Square Garden before an estimated 1,000 guests, including hundreds of A-list celebrity friends and industry tastemakers. Says a guest: “They were both beaming the entire night.”

Though Swift has long been known for having a group of high-profile besties, she and Kelce skipped a customary bridal party. Instead, the singer’s brother Austin, 34, served as her man of honor, while Kelce’s brother Jason, 38, was his best man. Adam Sandler, a childhood hero and recent costar of Kelce’s following the athlete’s cameo in Happy Gilmore 2, officiated the ceremony, and Kelce and Swift, both 36, exchanged vows they wrote themselves. (Sandler’s best advice to the newlyweds? “Keep kissing,” according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid).

An insider says the pair spent about 20 minutes each reading their vows and even handed out embroidered handkerchiefs during the ceremony to wipe away any stray tears. The custom tissues were stitched with a “TT” interlocking heart logo and a line from Swift’s 2014 hit “Blank Space,” a favorite of Kelce’s: “So it’s gonna be forever

In her vows—which attendee George Stephanopoulos described on Good Morning America as “real, vulnerable, serious and silly”—Swift praised Kelce for spending his high school lunch periods sitting with bullied kids and told their friends and family she “wished she knew someone like that when she was in high school,” a friend of the couple says. “Travis was very emotional during the vows,” a second source adds.

As expected, the bride wore white—but so did the groom: Swift’s ceremony gown (she changed into a second look for the reception) and Kelce’s white tux were both created by Christian Dior Haute Couture and designed by the brand’s creative director Jonathan Anderson in “close collaboration” with the couple. “She was absolutely glowing and floating around the room,” the friend says of Swift, who wore Christian Louboutin heels and Cartier jewelry. “I didn’t see her stop smiling once.”

The star-studded fĂȘte was an appropriately grandiose page turn in a love story that could’ve come straight from one of the romantic songs Swift has made her mark writing. In July 2023, Kelce publicly declared his crush on the singer after catching her Eras Tour stop in Kansas City—and after he shared his disappointment at not getting to give her a friendship bracelet featuring his phone number, the powers that be arranged their meet-cute. Swift’s surprise appearance at a Chiefs game in September 2023 hard-launched their budding romance, and they’ve been off and running ever since, with Kelce popping the question in August 2025. In their three years together, Kelce has become not only the pop star’s husband, but her muse, too; much of her most recent, record-shattering album, The Life of a Showgirl, was inspired by their relationship.

In the weeks leading up to the wedding, Swift and Kelce hardly let planning slow down their busy life together. In March, Kelce announced that he’ll return to the Chiefs for a 14th season despite retirement rumors, later calling it a “pretty easy” decision. Swift, meanwhile, notched her 15th No. 1 single in June with the release of “I Knew It, I Knew You” off the Toy Story 5 soundtrack and also became the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She was introduced at the ceremony by Steven Spielberg, who later attended the wedding alongside a who’s who of the sports and entertainment worlds.

The wedding guest list ran the gamut from actors (Brad Pitt, Emma Stone, Mariska Hargitay and Tom Hanks) and NFL stars (Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Patrick Mahomes), to musicians including Sabrina Carpenter, Miranda Lambert and members of Swift’s band and Eras Tour dancers. “Everywhere you looked there were stars, one more famous than the next. But it wasn’t like a typical Hollywood party—everyone was so down to earth,” the friend says. “Stars talked to family friends and were gawking just as much about the vibe and saying how happy they were to be there. There was an electric energy in the room.” (The night before, the pair hosted a more intimate—but nevertheless starry—rehearsal dinner at MSG with about 100 people, including members of their inner circle like Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff.)

As the couple prepared for their big day, so did New York City, a place that’s long been special to Swift, who owns an apartment in the Tribeca neighborhood. Dozens of vendors and staffers were seen heading in and out of MSG in the days leading up to the wedding as they worked around the clock to prep the venue. The insider says the arena’s stadium seating was draped with white chair covers, and ferns and trees were brought in to create a “forest” feel. Revamping the Garden into
well, a garden was likely no small feat, says celebrity event designer Edward Perotti. Calling the transformation a “Herculean effort,” Perotti—who has created events for stars like Ariana Grande and Nick Jonas—estimates the cost of renting the venue at $1 million per day and puts the total wedding price tag somewhere in the ballpark of $35 million to $50 million.

Though one of the world’s most famous arenas seemed like an unlikely choice for the couple, a third source says Swift and Kelce leaned into how “epic and unexpected” it was, noting that the privacy allowed by the venue by way of underground tunnels and impenetrable walls was ideal to keep paparazzi at bay. To further keep their celebration under wraps, sources say invitations were kept vague and guests were given glass cases to lock their phones away, each with individual keys.

On the wedding day, guests began making their glamorous arrivals around 3:30 p.m.—some, like Hugh Grant, ditched the heavily backed-up traffic and walked —and entered into a hall filled with childhood photos of the bride and groom, followed by the couple’s favorite photos documenting their romance. And once they were pronounced husband and wife, Swift’s mom Andrea invited everyone into a reception room, where a stage was set up for performances later in the night from Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney (who sang the Beatles classic “I Want to Hold Your Hand”), according to the insider. Guests enjoyed bites from a number of stations that featured Italian food, like pasta in a parmesan wheel, sushi, steak, burgers and fries and seafood. And of course,  “there were bars everywhere,” says the insider.

Kelce’s a pro athlete, so what’s a wedding without a little competitive spirit? The party featured a number of games for guests to play, and winners received tickets to be put toward a raffle. Items up for grabs included designer bags and a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle—the same car that Kelce drove Swift off into the sunset in after her first Chiefs game in September 2023.

Despite the large number of guests, the newlyweds took the time to “talk to everyone they could. She kept thanking everyone for being there,” the friend adds. Donna Kelce, mother of the groom, described the day as “magical” in a July 5 interview, while director Joseph Kahn, who has helmed videos for Swift including “Bad Blood” and “Look What You Made Me Do,” wrote on Instagram that the day was “so much funnier and emotional than expected.” He also joked that “literally everyone was there,” making the starry spectacle something of a Met Gala 2.0—but with an even more exclusive guest list.

The blocks outside MSG served as a headquarters of sorts for those who didn’t snag a coveted invite. Swifties gathered outside throughout the day and into the night, braving temperatures of up to 100 degrees amid a stifling heatwave as they tried to catch a glimpse of the festivities alongside throngs of news crews and photographers. Then, at 7:22 p.m., large screens outside the venue flashed “JUST&T MARRIED,” and a rep for Swift confirmed their union minutes later to People. “The ceremony joined both families together,” read the statement.

Swift has long been known for leaving her fans Easter eggs, and it seemed Mother Nature was in on the game for the wedding day. Just as Swift sings about “dancing through the lightning strikes” and coming out on the other side to a crystalline sky in her Kelce-inspired hit “Opalite,” a torrential downpour began shortly after the the couple said “I do”— only for the storm to give way to a rainbow that stretched over the city skyline. The Empire State Building even marked the occasion, changing its lights to serve as the star’s “something blue.”

For the fans who have followed Swift’s personal life for the past 20 years, her relationship with Kelce has evolved into her most public era yet. For years, they relied on the star’s lyrics for insight into her romantic highs and lows—but with Kelce, their romance unfolded on the Eras Tour in plain sight. She said at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in March that the athlete makes her feel “happy and confident and free... every single day.” And during a surprise appearance on his New Heights podcast last August (filmed the same day that he popped the question), the couple’s chemistry was on full display. “He’s just my favorite person I’ve ever met,” she said on The Tonight Show last fall. “The fact that this is the person that I get to hang out with every day forever, that’s the whole thing of it.”

With their nuptials  in the rearview, Swift and Kelce are expected to attend NFL star JuJu Smith-Schuster’s wedding in California on July 11. “They’re really excited to enjoy a few weeks of newlywed life before football season gets going again,” says another insider close to the couple. And as Kelce gears up to head to Chiefs training camp on July 28, perhaps Swift has some fond new memories on which to draw for a new love song or two as he eyes another Super Bowl win.

“All of us close to her know how long she’s wanted her happily ever after, and Travis is absolutely her Prince Charming,” the friend says. “It was just the perfect celebration for their fairy-tale love story.”
