Magnum, P.I. has been off the airwaves for nearly 40 years.
The classic series starred Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a former Naval officer and skilled private investigator in Hawaii. Airing 162 episodes over eight seasons, the show ran from 1980 to 1988, following Magnum as he solved crimes and tracked down bad guys.
Magnum P.I. became a huge hit, but in 1981, Selleck told Honolulu Magazine that the show almost never happened.
“The first script wasn’t a script I wanted to do,” Selleck said. “It was a good script, but it was more James Bondish, and I turned it down.”
After a new showrunner revitalized the script — and Selleck signed on — the series became a hit. According to Nielsen, the series debuted at No. 17 in household ratings and remained in the top 20 for the next three seasons.
So, where is the Magnum, P.I. cast now? Here's everything to know about the stars' lives after the show concluded in 1988.

Selleck played Thomas Magnum, a former Naval officer who pivoted to work as a private investigator in Hawaii. The role earned Selleck five Emmy nominations, an award he won once in 1984.
After his breakout role in Magnum P.I., he continued having a prominent TV career, starring in the made-for-TV Jesse Stone film series (2005-2015) and in the hit police procedural Blue Bloods from 2010 to 2024.
In 2025, a Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, premiered, starring Donnie Wahlberg as Donnie Reagan. But in a November 2025 interview with Hour Detroit, Selleck said he doubts he’d ever join the show as a principal character.
“I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history,” he said. “But I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan."
Off-screen, Selleck has been married to actress Jillie Mack since 1987. Together they welcomed a daughter, Hannah Selleck, in 1988, who is now an equestrian.

Hillerman earned five Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations for his role as Higgins — winning one of each, a Globe in 1982 and an Emmy in 1987. After his time on Magnum P.I., Hillerman landed a recurring role on the final season of The Hogan Family (1990-1991).
In November 2017, Hillerman died at 84 of natural causes. Selleck paid tribute to his former costar, telling The Hollywood Reporter how impactful his role on Magnum P.I. was.
“As Higgins, he could make people laugh as well as cry — many times in the same scene,” Selleck said. “That takes a skill that is not often understood.”

In August 2022, Mosley died after sustaining injuries from a severe car crash. His daughter broke the news on social media, but said she “could never mourn such an amazing man,” and instead it was time “to celebrate the legacy he left for us all.”
