Amanda Martinez thought her first date was off to a promising start.

After matching on Hinge in May, the 39-year-old senior technical recruiter from New York City met up with a man she’d already spoken with previously on the phone. The conversation flowed easily, they were enjoying each other’s company and, about 30 minutes into the date, had just ordered food.

Then everything changed. While chatting about her best friend, who is expecting her first baby, Martinez says her date suddenly started laughing before revealing that he had a child of his own.

“He said he had something funny to tell me,” Martinez tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Then he told me he had a child and just kept laughing about it.”

The confession immediately caught her off guard — not because he was a father, but because she says he had already told her the opposite.

Martinez says she makes her dating expectations clear from the beginning. Her Hinge profile states that she doesn’t want children, and before agreeing to a first date, she always schedules a phone call to discuss each other’s non-negotiables.

“I specifically asked him if he had kids or wanted kids because that’s a hard no for me,” she says. “He told me no.”

So when she asked why he hadn’t mentioned having a child, she says his response stunned her even more. “‘Because then you wouldn’t have come on this date,’” Martinez recalls him saying.

She says he continued trying to downplay the situation, insisting it “wasn’t that big of a deal” and attempting to justify keeping it from her.

For Martinez, however, the issue wasn’t that he was a parent; it was that he had lied.

“I have the utmost respect for single parents,” she says. “I was raised by a single parent, and I think it’s one of the hardest jobs in the world. If he had crossed a different boundary or lied about another deal breaker, I would’ve reacted the exact same way.”

Feeling overwhelmed, Martinez excused herself to the bathroom to collect her thoughts.

“I was really upset,” she says. “I knew I’d never see him again because dating someone with children is a non-negotiable for me.”

Normally, Martinez says, she would have finished the meal before politely telling someone afterward that she wasn’t interested in a second date. This time was different.

“I was fed up,” she says. “I was done sitting through bad dates, being disrespected, being lied to or having my boundaries pushed.”

Instead of returning to finish the evening, Martinez found her waiter on the way back to the table and quietly asked for her check.

Once it arrived, she paid her portion, told her date she was leaving because he had lied and violated one of her clearly established boundaries, then walked out of the restaurant.

“He was shocked,” she says. “He couldn’t believe I was leaving. But I didn’t care. I was over it.”

Moments later, Martinez pulled out her phone, opened TikTok and recorded a video recounting what had just happened.

Sharing her dating experiences online wasn’t unusual — she regularly posts about her life and relationships — but this video had a different purpose.

“I didn’t just want to vent about a bad date,” she says. “I wanted to encourage other women to start leaving dates when they’re disrespected, lied to or made to feel uncomfortable. I feel like, as women, we’re always expected to just sit there and smile.”

The video quickly resonated with viewers, racking up over 6.4 million views and thousands of comments from women applauding her decision to leave.

While Martinez says the viral attention has been surreal, it’s the messages from mothers and grandmothers that have stayed with her the most.

“They’ve told me they sent my video to their daughters and granddaughters because they wanted them to see a strong woman who respected her own boundaries,” she says. “That’s really special to me.”

She was also surprised to see support from activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Amanda Nguyen, who liked the video.

Despite the online attention, Martinez says the man has not reached out to her since their date.

“No,” she says. “And I’m glad he hasn’t.”

“One thousand percent I made the right decision,” Martinez continues. “Honesty is a deal breaker throughout any relationship, but especially in the beginning. I always say, if someone lies to you when they have nothing to lose, they’ll certainly lie when they have everything to lose.”

“It wasn’t about him having a child,” she adds. “It was about respecting my boundaries. I hope more women realize they don’t have to stay in situations where they’re being disrespected. You can simply get up and leave.”
